Rasoolan Bibi,wife of Param Vir Chakra awardee Abdul Hamid,was on Sunday given a cheque for Rs 5 lakh by Lieutenant General Anil Chait,Army Commander,Central Command,at a ceremony in Ghazipur.
The ceremony coincided with the receiving of Surya Kiran Torch in the district,a relay run which was flagged off from Bareilly on March 2 as part of Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Central Command.
Apart from Bibi,about 25 other ‘veer naris’ were felicitated.
The aged wife of the soldier,who died fighting in the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965,was also presented with a wheel chair and a “solemn promise” of a vehicle within a month. Hamid,of Grenadiers 4th battalion,destroyed three Pakistani army tanks at Chima in Khem Karan sector in Punjab on September 10,1965 and was mortally wounded by a shell. He was posthumously awarded Param Vir Chakra,India’s highest military honour,which was received by his wife from the then President of India S Radhakrishnan on the Republic Day function in 1966.
