A 62-year-old woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Lalitpur died allegedly by suicide Saturday shortly after a local court convicted her and four others, including her son and daughter, in a 2023 murder case. All five had been out on bail during the trial.

The woman, identified as Gendabai, was initially taken to a hospital in Lalitpur for treatment and later referred to Jhansi, where she died. Her postmortem is scheduled to be conducted Sunday in Jhansi.

“The woman attempted suicide shortly after the court pronounced her and four others guilty. She was rushed to the hospital as her condition began to deteriorate,” said Kalu Singh, Additional Superintendent of Police, Lalitpur. He added that the woman was not in police custody at the time of her suicide.

Sanjeev Lithoriya, Additional District Government Counsel (ADGC) Lalitpur, said, “The court had held all five accused guilty, and before it (court) could issue directives to take them into custody, the woman died by suicide.”

The four other convicts, Gendabai’s son Babloo, daughter Aapi, also known as Asharfi, and two others named Surendra Sirothia and Dropal, have been taken into custody and sent to jail, said the police.

The court is likely to pronounce the sentence on December 10.

According to the police, all five accused, including Gendabai, appeared in court Saturday for the final hearing. After completing the trial, the court convicted Gendabai and the four others.

According to the prosecution, the case dates back to September 17, 2023, when Parwati, a resident of Lalitpur, lodged an FIR accusing six people of murdering her son Kishan, 23, over a love affair.

Kishan was allegedly attacked with sticks while returning home and sustained serious injuries. He died during treatment, leading to murder and related charges against the accused.

Apart from the five who were held guilty, the police had also booked Gendabai’s husband Nandlal in the case. All the accused were arrested soon after the FIR was lodged and were sent to jail. They were released on bail after spending nearly a year in custody.

Nandlal, however, died during the course of the trial, said the ADGC.
