Forward Arif Idris blasted three goals— in the 20th,50th and 65th minute while Vijay Kumar Yadav struck apiece in the 68th minute as UP Civil Services team defeated HP Secretariat 4-2 in their pre-quarterfinal match of the All India Civil Services Hockey Tournament 2008-’09 which got off to a flying start at the Guru Govind Singh Sports College,Lucknow on Tuesday. Darshan netted the two goals for the HP team.

Six pre-quarterfinal matches were played on the first day. In their pre-quarter tie,RSB Hyderabad beat NCT Delhi 7-0,the goal scorers being Ibrahim (2 goals) and U Krishna,M Ilyas,Anand Ratan,Haseeb and skipper M Yunus (one goal each). Rohit Chauhan,Mahesh Dayal and Sanjeev Sharma netted a goal each as Central Secretariat,Delhi defeated RSB Kanpur 3-1. G Khan was the goal-scorer for RSB Kanpur.

Pondicherry defeated AP 9-0. The goal getters on behalf of the victors were DR Saravanan (3 goals),B Adhikesavan (3 goals),S Palani (2 goals) and KP Jeaees (1 goal).

Two goals by Sunil Kumar and apiece each by Gurmeet Singh and Manoj Kumar went a long way as RSB Chandigarh defeated RSB Mumbai 4-0.

Tabish Hayat found the target thrice,Xavie Gidh netted two goals while Manohal and Yogesh scored a goal each as RSB Patna beat MP Secretariat by 7-0.

The last prequarter-final match played between RSB Bangalore and RSB Indore had to be stopped 13 minutes before the regular time due to bad light. The scores were tied at 1-1 and now the remaining part of the match will be played on Wednesday afternoon.

RSB Jaipur got a walkover against Chandigarh Secretariat team.

Earlier in the day,the tournament was inaugurated by Atul Kumar Gupta,Chief Secretary (UP). Neeta Chaudhry (IAS) and Rajan Shukla,Principal Secretary Sports (UP) were the guests of honour. Director Sports (UP) Kunwar Vikram Singh also graced the occasion.

Wednesday’s Fixtures: Central Secretarial,Delhi vs RSB Jaipur (at 10.00 am);UP vs Pondicherry Secretariat (at 8.30 am);RSB Hyderabad vs RSB Patna (at 2.30 pm);RSB Chandigarh vs winner of RSB Bangalore vs RSB Indore match (at 4.00 pm).
