Event was shifted from Kolkata because of Mamata Banerjee’s opposition to FDI in retail

Despite the ruling Samajwadi Party’s opposition to foreign direct investment in retail, the Uttar Pradesh government has decided not to let go of the opportunity to host the global partnership meet of the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

The event was shifted to Agra from Kolkata because of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee’s opposition to FDI.

Taking the line that the SP is opposed only to FDI in retail and not other forms of FDI,the state government has decided to offer full support to the meet, which will take place from January 27 to January 29 in Agra.

A proposal to hold the meet in Agra was made by the Union ministry about 15 days back.

A high-level meeting was called by the chief secretary, with representatives of Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) and senior officials of the state government on Thursday, where it was decided that the state government would form a state-level committee to coordinate the event and sub-committee to look into security, protocol and other logistics.

The state government will be a partner to the event. UP will also get a chance to make a presentation before the investors regarding its public private partnership projects and other projects as investment opportunities.
