The Special Task Force (STF) of the Uttar Pradesh Police on Friday arrested former MLA Pawan Kumar Pandey in an alleged land grab case lodged against him in Ambedkar Nagar last year.

Based on the complaint of one Champa Devi in June 2022, an FIR was registered against Pandey and 11 others at Akbarpur police station. “Pandey, who was wanted in the case, was arrested in Barabanki,” a police officer said.

Champa Devi alleged that after the death of her husband Kedarnath Singh, the accused prepared a fake letter to grab her land in Akbarpur the cost of which would be to the tune of several crores of rupees.

The complainant further alleged that a fake marriage certificate of her son Ajay Singh, who died in a road accident in May 2020, was prepared.

According to police sources, the complainant also suspects Pandey’s involvement in the death of her son.

Police said based on the complaint, a case was registered against the accused under various IPC sections including 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 467 (forgery of valuable security, will, etc), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged 1[document or electronic record]), Section 328 (Causing hurt by means of poison, etc., with intent to commit and offence), 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and the investigation into the case was transferred to the STF.

Pandey, who hails from an influential political family, in Ambedkar Nagar, was elected as an MLA from the Akbarpur. He unsuccessfully contested the 1999 Lok Sabha election from Sultanpur. His nephew Ashish Pandey hit the headlines in 2018 when caught on camera brandishing a gun at a hotel in Delhi.
