Police at the spot at Akhri village in Fatehpur district on Tuesday (PTI)
Four persons, including a former village pradhan, were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the murder of Bhartiya Kisan Union’s district president, his son and brother at Akhri village of Fatehpur district a day before, police said.
Vinod Singh, alias Pappu (50), the BKU leader, his son Abhay Pratap Singh (21) and brother Anoop Singh alias Pinku (44) were shot dead on Tuesday over alleged panchayat election rivalry. Vinod and Anoop’s mother Ram Dulari is the local panchayat pradhan.
Those arrested are former pradhan Suresh Singh, alias Mannu (50), his sons Bhupendra Singh (23) and Piyush Singh (25) and cousin Sajjan Singh (44). Piyush and Sajjan were nabbed after an encounter in which they sustained bullet injuries on the leg, the police claimed.
They are undergoing treatment at hospital and their condition is stated to be stable, it is learnt. The police said an SUV tried to flee when it was signalled to stop on Wednesday morning during a vehicle checking drive. The occupants opened fire at the police team who retaliated, leaving Piyush and Sajjan injured, they claimed.
The SUV and two country-made pistols were seized, the officials said.
“Now, we are looking for two more suspects whose involvement emerged during the investigation,” said Fatehpur Circle Officer Prabhat Kumar Tiwari.
An FIR was registered on Tuesday against five persons, including Suresh Singh and his two sons, at the Hatgawan police station on the complaint of Abhay Pratap’s wife Manish Singh.
The police on Wednesday handed over the bodies of the victims to their family which conducted their funeral rites, said Hathgawan police station in-charge Aniket Bhardwaj.
