Two Class X girl students committed suicide by consuming poison in their classroom at Bhuta in Bareilly district on Tuesday. They took the extreme step reportedly because their parents had a fight over a piece of land and wanted them to break their friendship.
The girls Priya Singh alias Bunty and Sandhya, students of Chhatrapati Shivaji Bal Vidya Mandir School consumed pesticide in the afternoon, police said, adding that they were rushed to a private hospital where they died in the night.
Their last rites were performed today without informing the police about the incident. When the police came to know about the incident in the evening,Buntys father Ashok Singh alias Nanhe Babu and Sandhyas father Virendra Singh said they did not want to lodge an FIR in this connection. Bareilly DIG Prakash D has, however, ordered an inquiry into the incident by Police Station Officer Pankaj Awasthi. Awasthi, who visited the families, said that the girls, both 17-year-old,were neighbours.
Ashok told The Indian Express : Some time ago,I had an altercation with my neighbour Virendra over a piece of land near my house. My daughter was a close friend of Sandhya. After that incident, both the families told the girls to break up the friendship. But they remained friends and were even beaten up at home.
On Tuesday morning,he said,Sandhya reportedly took some sachets of pesticide while leaving for the school and both girls consumed it in the classroom during the lunch break.
