In the rarest of rare cases,two foetuses have been removed from the abdomen of a two-month-old boy in a surgery that lasted for about two hours.
Anuj,who hails from Mirzapur,was operated upon by a team of child specialists comprising Hizbur Rehman and Dhanesh Agrahari on Saturday at the Moti Lal Nehru Medical College.
Hospital sources said on Sunday that the boy was admitted two weeks ago for the treatment of a lump in his abdomen. A CT scan showed two foetuses had developed because of a rare abnormality in the infants abdomen.
As per the doctors who conducted the surgery,it was a rarest of rare abnormalities which occurs during the 10th to 12th week of embryo formation. Conceived as triplets,two of the embryos had instead of developing normally had entered the abdomen of the third.
The child is in a stable condition and likely to be discharged in a few weeks,the doctors said.
