Two persons were killed and four others injured when the two motorcycles on which they were traveling were hit by former BJP MLA Sashi Bala Pundir’s car in Kotwali Dehat police station area of Saharanpur, police said Friday. The incident took place Wednesday.
Of the four injured admitted to hospital, doctors stated the condition of two as critical.
Circle Officer, Sadar, Amit Kumar Nagar said police have seized the car and arrested its driver.
The deceased have been identified as Mumtaz and Intezar, both residents of Sidki village.
Station house officer, Kotwali police station, Maganveer Singh said they have come to know through local residents that the former MLA was present in the car when the incident occurred. Police official are verifying the claim. The SHO confirmed that the seized vehicle belongs to Shashi Bala.
As per the villagers, the incident occurred Wednesday evening when car collided with the motorcycles coming from opposite direction. Local residents rushed the victims to the hospital and also informed the police. While Mumtaz (65) died Thursday during treatment, Intezar (22) breathed his last Friday, police said.
Irked over the incident, locals staged protest at Sidki village and later at the hospital where victims were admitted. They were demanding better compensation for the families of the deceased. Senior police officials rushed to spot and brought the situation under control.
PTI quoted village head, Ashwini Kumar as saying that Intezar was the sole breadwinner for his family.
