Three school children were charred to death while 10 others, including the driver, suffered burn injuries after a Maruti van carrying them back home from school caught fire in Nagal police station area of Saharanpur district on Monday. Victims were students of Bhagwati Vidya Public School and the van belongs to the school owner.
District Magistrate, Saharanpur, Sandhya Tiwari said one of the critically injured children has been shifted to Delhi for treatment while others are admitted in a Saharanpur hospital.
The police have arrested school owner Anuj Kumar on charges of culpable homicide, and have said they would also probe the role of Assistant Basic Shiksha Adhikari as the school was functioning without any proper recognition.
Circle Officer, Nagal, Suresh Pal Singh said since there was no tension after the incident in Nagal area, the schools will remain opened. He added that the driver, Arun, who is the brother of owner Anuj Kumar, also sustained burns while trying to rescue the children.
