Three more held for Lucknow vandalism

Two persons had been arrested on Monday in connection with the two cases lodged at Chowk police station.

The Lucknow police on Tuesday arrested three more persons in connection with the vandalism that took place in the city on August 17 when a mob protesting against alleged atrocities on Muslims in Assam and Myanmar damaged vehicles,attacked journalists and vandalised two parks. Two persons had been arrested on Monday in connection with the two cases lodged at Chowk police station.

Police have arrested Suhail Ghazi,Wasiq and Abdul Haqiq,all residents of Hasanaganj area. Police said they were part of the mob which went on the rampage in the city while marching from Tilewali masjid in the Old City to Vidhan Sabha.

IP Singh,Inspector,Chowk,said Ghazi runs a milk dairy in Hasanganj,Wasiq is a mechanic and Haqiq works as an embroider. The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on Friday had asked the state government to give details of the action taken in connection with the rioting while hearing a PIL filed by advocate Ranjana Agnihotri. The next hearing in the case is on Wednesday.

Two more held for damaging Maya statue

Two persons have been arrested in connection with the vandalisation of former chief minister Mayawati’s statue at Ambedkar Memorial in Gomti Nagar area of Lucknow on July 26.

Shagun Tyagi,a resident of Railway Colony,Tilak Marg,New Delhi,and Pavan Sharma,a resident of Aman Vihar area of Delhi,were arrested from the Railway Officers’ rest house in Charbagh area of the city.

Police said Tyagi was the chief adviser of the little-known outfit,UP Navnirman Sena,and Sharma is its treasurer. The cadre of UP Navnirman Sena allegedly damaged the statue and six persons,including its national president Amit Jani,have already been arrested.

Sharma and Tyagi were named in the case registered at the Gomti Nagar police station.

Manoj Kumar Mishra,Station Officer,Gomti Nagar,said both were accused of planning the vandalisation of the statue. He said they were staying at the rest house,from where they were arrested after police received the information about their stay.
