A row over alleged eve-teasing in Colonelganj area of Allahabad late Sunday turned violent with youths resorting to stone-pelting in a market. Following an FIR lodged by shopkeepers, two persons have been taken in custody under preventive sections.
Police said some youngsters, reportedly belonging to Holland Hall Hostel of Allahabad University, had entered into an argument at a wedding in Buchadkhana area. Sources said the youths had allegedly indulged in eve-teasing at the function. There, they were reportedly beaten up.
Following this, the youths returned to the hostel and, after gathering their friends, reached the nearby Katra market and began pelting stones at shops. This led shopkeepers to down their shutters. When the students did not stop, several shopkeepers gathered at the spot and tried to chase them away.
The students then exploded some crude bombs and also damaged a couple of vehicles. Police subsequently reached the spot and used mild force to disperse the youths, who then went to the Holland Hall hostel.
Circle Officer (Colonelganj) Virendra Kumar said: “Two students, who were picked from the spot, were booked under preventive sections and sent to jail. The shopkeepers have lodged an FIR, on the basis of which, we are trying to identify the students, allegedly involved in the violence. Legal action will be taken accordingly. We are scanning the footage available to identify them.”
“It started from a fight at a wedding in Buchadkhana area. Most of the students were reported to be from Holland Hostel. The situation was brought under control in about an hour’s time,” said Colonelganj Inspector Siddharth Tomar.
On November 25, major violence had broken out in Salori in Colonelganj area, as youths had protested against increase in rent. Police had used force to bring situation under control and had arrested 62 people.
