The State Election Commission (SEC) may conduct the urban local body elections in four phases in June. SEC has also planned to extend the duration of polling by one hour.
In 2006,SEC had conducted elections category-wise in three phases. There were different phases for Nagar Nigam,Nagar Panchayat and Nagar Palika Parishad.
State Election Commissioner SK Agrawal on Friday said that the police department has suggested to conduct local body elections district-wise and not according to category. Police department has cited the reason that deployment as well as movement of security personnel of an entire range would be convenient if election is conducted in all local bodies in a district the same day, Agrawal said.
After the poll preparations of Lucknow and Faizabad divisions on Friday, the Election Commissioner said that district magistrates have welcomed the suggestion.
Political parties suggested to increase polling hours by one hour in view of the hot weather conditions in June when people usually avoid going out in daytime. Polling hours would be increased by one hour. But it has yet to be decided whether this extra hour will be in the morning or evening, Agrawal said.
The commission has so far conducted poll review in eight divisions including Lucknow,Faizabad,Agra,Aligarh,Meerut,Saharanpur,Bareilly and Moradabad. Officials said that review would be complete by May 20 and elections announced any day after that.
