A MOB of villagers entered into a confrontation with the police after 11 cows were killed and as many injured when a mini-truck, which was carrying the bovines, overturned and fell into a nullah in Firozabad late Wednesday.
Police said the mini-truck fell into the drain while trying to take a detour to avoid a nearby police check point.
Soon, locals gathered at the spot. The police team also arrived at the spot and managed to arrest one of the four persons in the truck — which was coming from Badaun. The other three had fled by then.
When the police tried to take the arrested man away, the angry mob refused to let him go and entered into a confrontation with the policemen.
“Locals wanted the man be handed over to them… As locals tried to stop the police from carrying the arrested person to the police station, a car was damaged,” SP (City) Sanjeev Kumar Bajpai said.
“An FIR has been lodged against four persons, including the one who has been arrested. No policeman was attacked or hurt in the incident,” he added.
Bajpai said prima facie, it appears that the cows were being illegally trafficked from Badaun. “They were being taken to Kanpur. The arrested person, Shadab, is a resident of Badaun. The three others with him are also from Badaun,” he added.
Firozabad North SHO Shashikant Sharma said an FIR has also been lodged against unidentified people who damaged a vehicle and created ruckus when police were arresting the accused. “While 11 cows died, as many survived,” he added.
