Claiming that the five terror suspects shot dead by Telangana police in April were innocent, Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi has announced that he will stage a dharna in Hyderabad on June 13 in demand of an enquiry into the incident and compensation for the five families.

“It was not encounter but murder. Five innocent Muslim youths were sent to jail. They were expected to be acquitted. They had apprehended threat to their life. The route was blocked when this encounter was planned,” said Azmi. He added that during the dharna, he will demand an inquiry into the alleged fake encounter by a sitting High Court judge, transfer of the terror cases against the five suspects to Maharashtra and a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for each of the five families.

Azmi, who is also president of SP’s Maharashtra unit, has also extended financial assistance to families of three suspects who were killed in the alleged fake encounter. Families of the two remaining terror suspects refused to accept the money.

Earlier, Azmi had handed over the assistance to families of Mohammed Haneef and Riyaz Khan when he visited Hyderabad on April 24.

“The families of Viqaruddin and Amjad said they do not need the money. We gave Rs 2 lakh to Riyaz’s family as they were more needy,” Azmi said.

Azmi blamed Hyderabad AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi for ignoring Muslims in the region. “None of the workers from his outfit attended their funeral. No help came from their side. He (Owaisi) only takes their votes. We will expose him and stage our demonstration in Hyderabad. It is his constituency,” Azmi said.

While Azmi said the financial assistance was not funded by the SP and it was his a personal gesture on his part, the move is being seen as SP’s attempt to corner Hyderabad MP and All India Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi in his home turf. Owaisi’s outfit is giving sleepless nights to the SP in Uttar Pradesh. Also, AIMIM has weaned away Muslim votes in Maharashtra polls, weakening Azmi in the process.

Mohammed Viqaruddin, Mohammed Haneef, Amjed Ali, Riyaz Khan from Hyderabad and Izhar Khan from Lucknow were killed when they allegedly attacked the police escort while being brought to Hyderabad for a court hearing. The incident took place near Jangaon in Warangal district, 100 km from Hyderabad on April 7. The five were allegedly associated with SIMI and were jailed in terror cases.
