Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to meet the personalities he had nominated for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan last year. The Union Urban Development Ministry has sent invitations to these dignitaries to join the PM for a tea session at his official residence in New Delhi on September 10.
Deputy Advisor in Urban Development Ministry Rohit Kakkar told The Indian Express that invitations have been sent to all the personalities including Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, who had been nominated by the PM on three different occasions. Kakkar said the PM has invited these personalities to discuss the ideas to make the campaign more effective.
Cricketer-turned-politician Mohammad Kaif told The Indian Express that he has received an invitation to meet the PM. Kaif, who hails from Allahabad and had unsuccessfully contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Phulpur, cited his busy schedule for being unable to visit Varanasi so far. He, however, said he had taken part in a cleanliness drive in Noida two months ago.
Among the personalities whom the PM had nominated on October 2 last year to take forward his clean India mission included Goa Governor Mridula Sinha, Yoga guru Baba Ramdev, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, actors Kamal Haasan, Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, industrialist Anil Ambani and the entire team of TV serial ‘Tarak Mehta Ka Oolta Chashma’. In his address, the PM had said that he expected these personalities to further nominate nine more persons to join the campaign.
The PM added nine more names to his list when he launched the campaign from Assi Ghat in his Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi on November 8. These included Akhilesh Yadav, cricketers Suresh Raina and Mohammad Kaif, BJP MP and Bhojpuri singer Manoj Tiwari, comedian Raju Srivastava, singer Kailash Kher, Padmashree Professor Devi Prasad Dwivedi, author Manu Sharma and Chancellor of Handicapped University of Chitrakoot Jagadguru Rambhadracharya.
Incidentally, barring Akhilesh, all eight persons have taken part in the cleanliness drive.
On his next visit to Varanasi on December 25, Modi again nominated personalities among whom were comedian Kapil Sharma, former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, former IPS officer Kiran Bedi, Nagaland Governor Padmanabha Acharya, classical dancer Sonal Mansingh, Ramoji Rao of Eenadu Group and Aroon Purie of India Today Group. The PM had also nominated organisations such as Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and ‘dabbawalas’ of Mumbai.
