A day after she met Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav at his residence,the UP government on Sunday revoked the suspension of the 2010 batch IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal and reinstated her in service.
While she has not been given any posting,sources said she had been given a clean chit by the government and would soon be given a posting as well. “Her suspension has been revoked and there are no ifs and buts attached to it. She has been given a clean chit,” said a senior government officer.
Nagpal was suspended on July 27 for ordering the demolition of the wall of an under-construction mosque at Kadalpur village in Gautam Budh Nagar where she was posted as Sub Divisional Magistrate. Her suspension was,however,largely linked to her crackdown on the powerful and illegal sand mining mafia.
The government had served her a charge-sheet,alleging that she lacked “foresight” in ordering the demolition in the month of Ramzan as it could disturb communal harmony.
Nagpal,however,denied the charge in her reply and maintained no communal discord took place after the demolition.
The state government ordered an inquiry into the incident on August 29,saying there were factual discrepancies in her reply. Principal Secretary of Home RM Srivastava was the inquiry officer and the inquiry is still pending. “The inquiry has no meaning now. Her suspension has been revoked. This means the government is satisfied with her reply,” a senior officer said.
Nagpal’s suspension had prompted attacks on the government from various quarters. Congress president Sonia Gandhi had written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh,seeking his intervention to ensure that she gets justice. The IAS Association,both at the state and the central level,demandied recall of her suspension.
