Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj on Saturday said that the society has to change its mindset and the governments were required to restore their terror on the criminals to ensure safety of women.
Senior BJP leader Sushma was addressing a Naari Raksha Sankalp Rally that Bharatiya Janata Partys (BJP) womens wing had organised at Jhulelal Park in Lucknow to protest against atrocities on women. Sushma said that there was nothing like law and order in UP and government has no control over criminals.
Sushma said that everybody, including herself, had expected a positive change in UP when Akhilesh Yadav had taken oath as Chief Minister in 2012. Crime against women has increased in the state in the past one year and the situation of law and order has deteriorated. UP has broken all records of incidents of rape as compared to other states, Sushma said. She said that no one from a girl child of 2 years to elderly women of 60 years was not safe now.
Sushma said that she had warned the people of the state before Assembly elections not to vote in favour of the Samajwadi Party (SP). During poll campaign I had warned that crime will increase in the state if SP comes to power. But people did not pay heed to my warning and gave more votes to SP, Sushma said. She said that police was not lodging FIRs in several cases due to pressure from ruling party leaders.
Sushma said that the idea of gender budgeting will not empower women. Education, security, financial independence and political reservation are four things required for women empowerment, she said.
State party president Laxmikant Bajpai said that the rally had been organised to warn the Chief Minister to control crime in the state. If the government will not control atrocities on women, the BJP will stage agitations across the state, he said.
