Recognising her contribution towards public welfare and her crusade in ensuring proper sanitation for women folks in Bhabhanipur village,NGO Sulabh International honoured Manorani Yadav with cash prize and by appointing her as its brand ambassador to push for sanitation awareness in the region.
Manorani,a widow and mother of six, donated her entire land property to the state government to construct eight public toilets in the village after the state failed to procure land for the cause.
Sulabh founder Dr Bindeshwar Pathak handed over Rs 2 lakh cash prize to Manorani, who is a daily wage worker, and also announced a monthly dole of Rs 10,000 to be given to her by the NGO.
She has set an example worth emulating, he said.
Manoranis decision to donate whatever land she possessed came after none of the government agencies came forward to give land for the purpose even though the district magistrate (Kinjal Singh),whom Manorani and other women had approached requesting that public toilets be constructed in the village, had arranged for the required funds,Pathak said.
The NGO also honoured the Bahraich DM,too, along with two brides from Gorakhpur region who had revolted against their in-laws over lack of toilet facilities at their respective places.
Also,on the eve of World Disabled Day,Sulabh introduced a special toilet for differently-abled in Allagani village in Barabanki, the idea for which was mooted by an Austria-based young IT professional who hails from this
village.
