A BA second-year student reportedly committed suicide in Lucknow’s Ghazipur area early on Thursday after posting a message on social networking site Facebook about his intention to kill himself.

According to police,Saurabh Gupta (20),a resident of Lakhimpur, had been living in rented accommodation in Shakti Nagar for the last six months. He was a student of Nagar Nigam Degree College in Chinhat area.

His friend Gaurav Singh said Saurabh posted a message on his Facebook page around 4 am on Thursday, saying the journey of his life was coming to an end and bidding goodbye to all his friends.

“While some friends thought Saurabh was kidding,a few tried to call him and the calls went unanswered. Then one of them called me and asked me to go and check at his place,” Gaurav said.

Gaurav, who lives in a hostel in the same locality, rushed to the house where Saurabh lived. He found the door locked from inside and no one answered his knocks. Gaurav told Saurabh’s landlord and the door was forced open. Saurabh was found hanging with a nylon rope tied to the ceiling fan.

Gaurav said Saurabh was a bit disturbed after his BA second year result came out on Saturday as he had not got the expected percentage of marks, but it never seemed he would take such a step.

Gaurav said he and Saurabh had recently received A grades in their NCC certificate after two years’ training. He said Saurabh wanted to join the army but his BA percentage was a bit lower than the requirement.

Gaurav said many friends used to visit Saurabh regularly when he lived in Aliganj area but after he shifted to this new accommodation, there were fewer meetings with friends.

Police recovered a suicide note from the room,in which Saurabh had written that he was sorry for having failed in life. Police said he also thanked his family for their support.
