State Election Commission postpones Mathura civic polls

The State Election Commission has postponed the local body elections in Mathura district in view of a local festival which will be celebrated on July 3 and 4.

The State Election Commission (SEC) has postponed the local body elections in Mathura district in view of a local festival which will be celebrated on July 3 and 4. The commission will announce a fresh poll programme for Mathura after completion of all four phases of the elections in other districts.

Joint Election Commissioner JP Singh said Mathura district election office had informed the SEC that the festival of Mudiya Poono will be celebrated there on July 3 and 4. On the occasion,a fair will be organised there which will begin on June 28 and continue till July 5. Polling was scheduled for Nagarpalika Parishad and Nagar Panchayat in Mathura on July 4 and counting of votes for July 7.

The district officials informed that more than one crore devotees are expected to visit Mathura during the fair from across the country and abroad. A large number of police personnel and administration officials from Mathura and adjoining districts would be required to maintain law and order which would affect the election preparations and arrangements. Therefore,the elections in Mathura should be held after July 10.

In a view of the request,the SEC has postponed the local body elections there. These will now be held with Ramabai Nagar,Auraiya and Kannauj where elections have been deferred in view of Kannauj Lok Sabha by-election on June 24.

BJP declares mayoral candidates for 6 seats

Lucknow: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has declared its candidates for the six seats of mayor and 40 of Nagarpalika Parishad chairman for which elections will be held in June and July. For the seats of mayors,BJP has decided to field Satya Pandey in Gorakhpur,Gulshan Anand in Bareilly,Veena Agarwal in Moradabad,Jagatveer Singh Drona in Kanpur,Shakuntala Bharti in Aligarh and Kiran Verma in Jhansi.
