Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav Monday directed sugar mill owners in western UP to begin crushing the cane between November 20 and 25 while those in other parts of state should do so by November 30. Any failure in following the directive will invite strict strict action against the mill owners.

As per an official statement,Akhilesh,in a review meeting for the cane crushing session 2013-2014 Monday, has asked the officials of the cane and sugar industries department to ensure that all mills, private or cooperative,in Meerut,Saharanpur and Moradabad division start crushing by November 25.

Normally, the mills in the western UP are first to start crushing by mid November. However, this year, there being a deadlock between the state government and the sugar industry over the state advisory price (SAP) for sugarcane, the mills have not yet fixed a date to start crushing.

The Uttar Pradesh Sugar Mills Association has maintained that they are not in a position to start crushing until the state government declares the SAP.

On the other hand, the state government has only just initiated the process

of deciding the SAP,with a meeting under Chief Secretary Jawed Usmani scheduled to be held Tuesday.

The sugar industry will die if it has to bear a loss this year too. We are requesting that any price above Rs 225 per quintal be paid by the government to the farmers directly,” said C B Patodia, president of the association.

Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) Monday threatened a statewide protest and gherao of cane commissioner’s office if the state failed to declare the state advisory price (SAP) for cane. RLD state president Munna Singh Chauhan alleged the government is delaying the announcement of SAP in connivance with the mill owners. “Our party will gherao the cane commissioner’s office in Lucknow on November 21 and later go for a bandh if the government did not declare the SAP,” he said.
