Meerut police Wednesday registered a case of rioting, attempt to murder and criminal intimidation against Samajwadi Partys student wing president Atul Pradhan, district unit president Vipin Bhadana and party workers for the violence that broke out following SPs loss in the student union elections at Meerut College Tuesday.
Pradhan had contested the 2012 Assembly elections as SP candidate from Sardhana constituency in Meerut. He was placed third while the seat was won by BJPs Sangeet Singh Som.
Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, however, appointed Pradhan as state president of Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha (SCS) in September. In his election affidavit,Pradhan had declared 19 criminal cases that are pending against him in Meerut district, including those of attempt to murder, the Gunda Act and the Gangster Act,7- Criminal Law Amendment Act.
Despite his criminal records,Pradhan was provided with six police gunners by Akhilesh Yadav government.
After the fresh case of violence registered against him, four of the gunners were withdrawn by the Meerut SSP Wednesday.
Pradhan had announced the panel of SCS candidates for students union poll in Meerut College and had also campaigned. However, all five candidates fielded by him on different posts, including president,vice-president and general secretary lost to BJPs students wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
After the defeat,ABVP and SCS supporters clashed and several vehicles were damaged Tuesday. Police resorted to lathi charge to chase both the groups away.
Later,a case was registered against ABVPs student leaders namely Ankur Rana,Varun Goyal,Pramod Katha and several others on Pradhans complaint.
Local BJP leaders were agitated over the case registered against the ABVP workers. BJP MLAs Ravindra Bhadana,Satya Prakash Aggrawal met Meerut district magistrate Randeep Rinwa and demanded that a case against Pradhan and others be registered. BJPs state president Laxmikant Bajpai, who also belongs to Meerut, demanded registering of the case.
Local police later registered a case against Pradhan at Lalkurti police station.
However,no arrest has been made so far in both the cases. The case is under investigation. The arrest will be made after collecting the evidence, Iqbal Ahmed Kaleem,SHO of Lalkurti police station stated.
