Amity University Police yet to take action against the law student despite named in FIR.

A woman teacher of Amity University was allegedly abused and slapped by a student, who is son of a ruling Samajwadi Party MLA,on Thursday. The student is also related to SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Abhinav Gupta, who is a law student of the university, allegedly bore a grudge against the lecturer,Archana Shukla, ever since she refused to increase his attendance in her class despite his long absence last year. He had been regularly harassing her and had even been suspended once.

However,a day after the reported physical assault, police had not taken any action in the matter despite an FIR was lodged by the police on the teacher’s complaint.

On Friday,Shukla, who teaches labour law and jurisprudence, met Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and urged him to ensure her security. Shukla said she told the Chief Minister that she was being harassed by Abhinav, son of SP MLA from Bidhuna Pramod Gupta, for the last more than a year by making unwanted calls, threats and derogatory and abusive remarks in the university.

She said the Chief Minister promised her security and strict action against Abhinav.

Amity University spokesperson Ashutosh Chaubey said the university administration had suspended Abhinav. A three-member committee headed by Director of Languages Department,Manju Agarwal, had been formed to conduct an inquiry and submit its report by Monday.

Abhinav and his MLA father were not available for their comments. Samajwadi Party spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary said he was not aware of the incident as he was travelling. Shukla said Abhinav had been harassing her for more than one year after his attendance in the jurisprudence class was found less than the mandatory required to appear in the semester examination in December 2011. She said the boy initially pestered her to increase her attendance, which she could not do as he had not attended classes for a long time.

In February last year,Shukla said Abhinav had hurled expletives at her and she had complained to the university administration. Abhinav was then suspended, but his suspension was revoked after his parents submitted a written apology.

However,Abhinav kept harassing her with derogatory remarks on the campus,on the phone and on social networking sites. She said she had already stopped giving lectures in Abhinav’s class and avoided going to the floor of the building where he studied.

On Thursday,Abhinav came to the classroom of LLB sixth semester, where she was teaching, and started to make derogatory remarks. He was taken out by his friends, but later when she left the class after completing her lecture, she found Abhinav waiting outside. He again started abusing her and also slapped her. On coming to know of the incident, other teachers gathered and demanded immediate action against the student.

Later,Shukla lodged a complaint with Chinhat police station. Police booked Abhinav under Sections of IPC 354 (assault or criminal force on a woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 354-D (continuously harassing a girl by following her or staring at her).

Additional SP of (Trans-Gomti) Habibul Hasan said while the offence under IPC 354 was bailable, the one under 354-D was non-bailable. He said action against the accused will be taken after investigation and collecting evidence.

Sub-Inspector Brijlal Verma, who is investigating the case, said he had recorded the victim’s statement and had sought details of teachers and students present at the time of incident from the university administration.
