UP Police has booked Samajwadi Party MLA Vishambhar Singh Yadav and two others in a case in which a 39-year-old woman committed suicide by setting herself ablaze after allegedly being molested. Vishambhar represents Banda’s Baberu constituency, the area where the woman committed suicide on August 3.

The FIR was registered Monday on a local court’s direction. The other accused are Shankar Lal Yadav and Mahesh Yadav — both deceased’s neighbours. The charges include molestation and abetment of suicide. No arrests have been made so far.

Baberu police station SHO K N Mishra confirmed the FIR against Vishambhar and the two others.

Meanwhile, the police claimed that there was a land dispute between the accused and the victim. The deceased’s husband,a farmer, alleged that said that Shankar and Mahesh had grabbed his land while Vishambhar had provided shelter to the duo.

The deceased’s husband claimed he had purchased a plot of land in 2006 close to his house and had got some rooms built there. In 2012,Shankar and Mahesh locked the rooms claiming that they were actual owners of the land.

The farmer claimed he had complained to the police, but no action was taken. He said that when he filed complaint with the senior police officials, the accused started harassing them and used to pass lewd remarks against his wife.

“On August 3,when my wife was alone,Shankar and Mahesh entered our house forcibly and molested her. Following intervention of neighbours, they returned but warned my wife of dire consequences. When I returned home, she told me about the incident. We decided to lodge a police complaint next morning. She,however, refused to go saying that police will not initiate any action as they were acting upon Vishambhar’s directions. Later in the night,my wife ended her life by immolating herself,” the farmer said,

He said he filed a complaint with police about his wife’s suicide following harassment, but the police did not lodge an FIR. He then moved court seeking directions to police register a case.
