Meerut police on Monday arrested Samajwadi Party Yuvjan Sabha district president Om Pal Gujar for allegedly slapping a government doctor at Meerut Circuit House,where he was summoned by Labour and Employment Minister Shahid Manzoor on Saturday.
The police produced Gujar before the court,which sent him to jail.
Station officer,Civil Lines Police Station,Charan Singh Sharma said Gujar has been booked on charges including causing hurt to deter a public servant from his duty,assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty and obstructing a public servant in discharge of public functions.
The doctor,B K Gupta,told The Indian Express that Om Pal was the person who had slapped him at the Circuit House. Dr Gupta said he identified Gujar from reports in local newspapers that carried his photographs.
The police said they are looking for one Jitendra who had pushed Dr Gupta at the Circuit House before Gujar slapped him.
Dr Gupta was slapped because he had refused to withdraw an FIR he had lodged against one Urmila Bhati for practising medicine without any medical qualification.
