A group of Samajwadi Party workers created a ruckus after 17 EVMs from Babina constituency of Jhansi developed a technical snag when the SP candidate was trailing behind his BSP candidate by 247 votes.
Led by the candidate,SP workers allegedly misbehaved with the staff at the counting centre,as well as with policemen and mediapersons. They also damaged media equipment.
The snag was later rectified and the votes in the EVMs were counted, but the result had not yet been declared.
Chief Electoral Officer Umesh Sinha said they were coordinating with the Jhansi administration and the observer to make arrangements so that the result could be declared.
A large crowd had gathered outside the counting centre.
Sinha said the EVMs stopped working after their batteries got exhausted. Apparently, the polling staff had not turned off the machines after the polling was over in the constituency on February 23.
Jhansi District Magistrate Anil Garg said the EVMs were initially kept aside during the process of counting on the direction of the observer.
When the counting on other machines ended,BSP candidate Krishna Pal Singh Rajpoot had 2,706 votes while SP candidate Chandrapal Singh Yadav was on 2,459.
Jhansi SSP A Satish Ganesh said that the SP candidate and party workers became angry as they came to know that Counting Observer S Murugaia and DM Garg had decided to declare the BSP candidate a winner. He said SP workers misbehaved with the staff, policemen and the media.
The situation was controlled after the DM and observer talked to the Election Commission and withheld the result till the counting on the remaining 17 EVMs was done, the SSP added.
SP workers also created ruckus in Agra, demanding recount of votes in Khergarh constituency. They allegedly misbehaved with SP (City) Ashok Prasad and Circle Officer (CO) of Achhnera area Karunakar Rao.
The police said that BSP candidate Bhagwan Singh Kushwaha defeated SP candidate Rani Pakshalika Singh by 7,106 votes.
Agra DIG Asim Kumar Arun said the SP candidate was trailing behind the BSP candidate by over 6,000 votes and counting on two EVMs was yet to be completed when SP workers caused disturbance, demanding a recounting.
In Ferozabad City,SP workers clashed with police and blocked the road after party candidate from the constituency Azim Bhai was defeated by BJP candidate Manish Asija.
Agra Range IG P K Tiwari said that the clash broke out following a rumour about the party candidate losing to the rival candidate by a margin of 15 votes while he was defeated by a margin of over 2,000 votes.
The SP men started throwing stones at passing vehicles and clashed with the policemen who had to apply force to disperse them, the IG added.
SP spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary said that state party president Akhilesh Yadav had condemned the violence in Ferozabad. Yadav said that action would be initiated against the officials who failed to prevent such incidents.
