Faced with power crisis in the state, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) is now exploring ways to reduce electricity consumption in the city. The civic body is in talks with various companies for the provision and installation of Light-Emitting Diode (LED) streetlights,in place of the existing streetlights.
We are in talks with various LED manufacturers. Once the modalities are worked out and the company is finalised, the LEDs will be used for lighting the narrow lanes in the city, said R N Pal,Additional Municipal Commissioner,LMC.
The civic body,at present, spends over Rs 1 crore every month on energy costs generated by streetlights that number over a lakh in the state.
Even as the initial cost of installing LED streetlights is costlier than the normal streetlights,it will help in energy conservation. However, its utility in terms of cost, design and output needs to be seen and tested. LED streetlights provide good illumination and also save on energy costs, said a senior LMC official.
The civic body had, earlier, launched a pilot project of fitting automatic sensor switches on streetlights lined up on the main roads. Nearly 2,000 streetlights with sensor switches are set to come up on the 16-km-long stretch between Nishatganj and Amausi airport. With the help of these switches, the streetlights will be tuned for automatic function they will turn on and off automatically.
