MORTAL REMAINS of Mohammed Yusuf, who died in an accident in Riyadh on December 10, arrived at Lucknow’s Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport on Friday evening. The body was handed over to his family, which later left for their native village in Rae Bareli.
Last Saturday, Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani had called up Yusuf’s family, assuring all help in bringing the body back to India. This came after Yusuf’s mother Hakeema and her grandson Noor Mohammed met Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in Amethi, requesting his help in this regard. “Airport authorities handed over the body to us around 4 pm and we are on way to Rae Bareli,” Noor Mohammed said.
Yusuf was employed as a private driver in Riyadh since September last year. Since December 10, his family had been approaching the Prime Minister Office, Ministry of External Affairs, UP chief minister and local Samajwadi Party MLA Asha Kishore for the body to be brought to India, but to no avail. On December 23, the family met Rahul with an application.
Three days later the family received a call from Irani. The family claimed they received two more calls from the minister. The Indian Embassy in Riyadh later contacted Yusuf’s family and completed formalities within a week to send the body to Lucknow. “The mortal remains of Mohd Yusuf of Amethi will reach Lucknow from Riyadh on January 1, 2016 by flight… at 1410 hours,” External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had tweeted on Thursday.
“Thank you for helping the family, ma’am, grateful for the quick response we got from you and your office,” Irani said in another post.
