PWD Minister Shivpal Yadav,in a letter to US President Barack Obama, has said that the detention of his cabinet colleague,Azam Khan,at Logan International Airport,Boston, reflects racial discrimination in the US and has lowered the image of Obama and his country.
Azam Khan had gone to the US,along with Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav,on an official visit to Harvard University for a lecture on successful management of Kumbh Mela. Upon his arrival at Logan International Airport in Boston on last Thursday, however,Azam was detained for some time by the authorities. This irked Azam and later as a mark of protest,CM Akhilesh Yadav cancelled all his official engagements, including the lecture at Harvard University.
Taking a strong note of the incident,Shivpal Yadav,in his letter addressed to Obama, termed the incident as highly unfortunate for democratic values and civil pride. This objectionable incident reflects the racial discrimination attitude of the US. Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King had visualised a US,which was free from racial discrimination, Shivpal stated.
He also mentioned that socialist ideologue Dr Ram Manohar Lohia on May 27-28,1964,while protesting against discrimination on the basis of race and religion, had courted arrest during a satyagrah in the USA. While releasing him,the Home Department of US had expressed their regret, Shivpal mentioned in his letter.
Shivpal welcomed Akhilesh Yadavs decision to boycott the lecture at Harvard University, terming it as a step in the right direction. Discrimination among people in this era of globalisation is unjust. This incident has lowered the image of US and President Obama,Shivpal has said.
The PWD minister also requested that the US administration should make such provisions that so no diplomat from non-US and European countries is insulted and every person gets adequate respect.
