Seven get life term for businessman murder

A Jaunpur court on Monday convicted seven persons,including four policemen and two home guards,for the murder of a businessman in 2002 and sentenced them to life imprisonment.

A Jaunpur court on Monday convicted seven persons,including four policemen and two home guards,for the murder of a businessman in 2002 and sentenced them to life imprisonment.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each on the convicts who include R P Tyagi,the then station officer of Sujanganj police station in Jaunpur,constables Ramesh Yadav,Gorakhnath and Mritunjay Rai,home guards Vijay Shankar Tiwari and Ashok Singh,and one Hari Narayan.

According to the prosecution,Hari Naryan and Munnu Lal,both businessmen,had a dispute over a piece of land located at Balwarganj,near Munnu Lal’s residence.

On September 14,2002,Hari Narayan forcibly tried to grab the land. Munnu Lal’s son Subhash rushed to Sujanganj police station to complain,but the cops put him in the lock-up.

In the meantime,Hari Narayan and his men attacked Munnu Lal,who rushed to his house and locked himself inside. Hari Narayan’s wife called up the police and informed them about the incident.

Station Officer RP Tyagi sent three constables and two home guards to the spot. They asked Munnu Lal and his family to open the door. When they refused,the policemen and home guards entered the house by scaling the wall.

They beat up Munnu Lal,threw him down from the first floor of the house,and again beat him up while taking him to the police station.
