Apprehending adverse reactions from other communities, the Samajwadi Party government is likely to expand the ambit of its scheme of giving a financial assistance of Rs 30,000 to Muslim girls for marriage or pursuing higher education after their Class X examination.
The ruling SP had promised this scheme in its election manifesto. In its very first meeting held on March, the Akhilesh Yadav Cabinet had approved a proposal to this effect. However, the necessary government order to implement the scheme has still not been issued.
Sources said the government is considering changes in the scheme in view of criticism, particularly from the BJP,which described it as discriminatory and ”appeasement of minorities.
Asked why the order of the scheme had not been issued,Minorities Welfare Minister Azam Khan said it was pending with the Chief Secretary and may be issued soon. He said it was a procedural delay.
Asked whether the domain of the scheme was being expanded to cover girls of all communities,he said,If it is done I have no objection. It is my assurance that Muslim girls will get Rs 30,000 after clearing Class X examination. If some other sections also gets the benefit, there is no harm. We are not against anyone, but want development of the Muslim community.
We will make a special provision in the budget for the schemes funding, he added.
