A CBI court on Wednesday granted bail to gangster Abu Salem in connection with the fake passport case. Salem is accused of forging documents and procuring passports under fake names.
The bail was granted by Special Judicial Magistrate Neel Kant Mani Tripathi.
Salems lawyer Amir Naqvi said the court had directed him to submit two sureties of Rs 50,000 each. The next date of hearing is April 4.
Salem,who was deported from Portugal in 2005,is lodged in Taloja Central Jail in Navi Mumbai. His trial in Lucknow is being conducted through video-conferencing.
The case dates back to 1997,when the Special Task Force of the CBI had lodged an FIR against Salem,his wife Samira Jumani and a broker Pervez Alam for allegedly forging documents and procuring passports under fake names from the Lucknow regional passport office on July 6,1993. Alam was also named in the case.
