Sachin should retire: Kirti Azad

Kirti Azad is upset at Team India’s show in Australia.

Former Indian cricketer Kirti Azad is upset at Team India’s show in Australia. He is of the view that seniors should now give way to the youngsters and says it’s time legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar should retire.

Commenting on Sachin Tendulkar’s current form,Azad, who was in the state capital on Tuesday as a judge for the auditioning of an upcoming cricket reality show on UTV Bindass—‘Cricket Champs’,said,“You are as good as your last performance. One can understand that you are out of form in a particular series but not in two series. It is your current performance which matters. Besides,Sachin,Laxman should also think in terms of retiring. Sehwag,I feel, has another two or three years of cricket left in him.” He,however, adopted a soft approach towards Rahul Dravid over the retirement issue.

“Players should announce retirement at such a time that people should be surprised and think ‘why now’ (as the player is in decent form) and not ‘why not now’. For example, when Sunil Gavaskar retired even I was surprised,” he said.

Kirti, who was part of the of the 1983 World Cup winning team, said that unlike in Australia where even players like Ricky Ponting are dropped from the team if they do not perform,“it is sad that in India this was not the case.” He said that youngster Virat Kohli has shown his mettle in the game as he was given opportunities to show it and advocated that he should be promoted as a vice-captain of the team.

Replying to a question, even while praising MS Dhoni he did not forget to mention Tendulkar’s name. “ Sachin can’t be a good captain because he looks for his capabilities in the other players while MS Dhoni is street smart. He adjusts players in accordance with the need of the situation.” On Indian team’s dismal show in Australia under Dhoni’s captaincy,Azad said,“Victory is not possible everywhere.”

Regarding Suresh Raina,Kirti Azad said,“Raina is a very good player but inconsistent also. You do not expect big knocks in all the matches but after a couple of matches you do expect a 50 for 100 coming from a player who is a good batsman.” He also felt that there was need in bringing changes in Ranji Trophy so that it can prove more beneficial for the Indian cricket.
