The state government Saturday announced a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each for 1,800 Muslim families displaced in the riots in Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts Saturday. A total of Rs 90 crore has been released for the purpose.
The displaced families,who belong to nine villages of the two districts,have the choice to rehabilitate at any place of their choice and use the money either to repair their house or construct a new one.
The decision follows reports from Muzaffarnagar and Shamli administrations received three days ago that families were unwilling to return home and could be rehabilitated with financial aid.
The official said families in relief camps want the government to provide houses or land to rehabilitate them. “But construction of houses for such a large number of families can take at least six months. During that period,security as well as other basic facilities in the camps would be a huge responsibility for the administration,” added an official.
He also added that if all of them were rehabilitated at one place,they could be identified easily and could be attacked in future.
Muzaffarnagar district magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma said,“The cheques of the financial assistance announced today would be distributed to affected families within a week of issuance of government order.”
Sharma said those who have migrated to their relatives’ place in other districts would be contacted so that they can also collect cheques.
