Angry over the death of two teenaged cousins in a road accident,a mob of villagers fought a pitched battle with police force for over five hours and torched four vehicles including those of a sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) and a station officer (SO) in Madiyahun police station area of Jaunpur district on Tuesday.
Police have lodged an FIR against the rioters and efforts were being made to identify them, said Jaunpur SP Bali Karan Singh Yadav.
He also said that todays incident was sequel to an accident which occurred last evening at Unchni Kala market on Jaunpur-Bhadohi Road. Mahesh Gupta (17) and his cousin Raj Kumar (18) of Unchni Kala village were having tea at a stall in the market when a rashly driven private bus hit the teenagers causing critical injuries.
While the driver escaped, locals rushed the victims to Jaunpur district hospital from where they were rushed to Varanasi,Yadav said. He said Mahesh died on way to Varanasi while his cousin succumbed to his injuries early this morning.
The family members brought Maheshs body to the village soon after his death. The locals later placed the body on the Jaunpur-Bhadohi Road and staged a blockade around 7.30 am demanding a compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the kin of each of the deceased.
Madiyahun SDM Rajendra Kumar and SOs of Madiyahun and Rampur police stations arrived there to pacify the agitators but in vain. As the people refused to lift the bockade, police resorted to lathicharge that led the locals to attack police, the SP said.
He said the mob also torched an UPSRTC bus and a Tata Magic taxi. The brick-batting continued till Jaunpur DM Suhas LY and the SP reached there and assured the family members to send a recommendation to the government for compensation. The agitation ended around 2 pm.
