The Special Investigating Cell probing into the last year’s Muzaffarnagar communal riots has arrested zila panchayat member Shakir Ali and his associate Irshad for their alleged involvement in the attack on a group of people returning from the mahapanchayat held at Nagla Mandaur on September 7.
Circle Officer, Khatauli area, D K Mittal said two cases were lodged against Ali and others in the attack in which four people were killed and 35 others left injured at two different places in Purbaliyan village on September 7, the day the riots broke out.
While Ali (45) was arrested during a vehicle checking drive in Shahpur area on Friday, Irshad was arrested on Saturday.
Ali’s arrest saw locals staging protest, raising slogans against the state government and gathering outside Mansoorpur police station area, following which the police had to put adequate arrangements in place while producing the two accused before a local court which has sent them to judicial custody.
