Rift in Kanpur Cong takes the steam out of protests

Though the much-hyped Jail Bharo Andolan of the District Congress Committee on Tuesday turned out to be a dull affair,it exposed the increasing chasm between party legislator Ajay Kapoor and Union Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal.

Though the much-hyped Jail Bharo Andolan of the District Congress Committee on Tuesday turned out to be a dull affair,it exposed the increasing chasm between party legislator Ajay Kapoor and Union Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal.

During the last few days, the district Congress committee has held a number of protests to oppose the police action against party chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi. Interestingly,Kapoor and his supporters have maintained distance from all the protests, which were held under the leadership of city party president Mahesh Dixit,a member of the Jaiswal camp.

The Jail Bharo Andolan at Bada Chauraha on Tuesday was no exception either. Only supporters of Jaiswal, including his brother Pramod Jaiswal, city Congress president Mahesh Dixit,Seesamau legislator Sanjeev Dariyabadi and Rohit Kohli, the leader of the traders, were present during the protest.

Taking a serious note of the issue,Dixit has decided to report the issue to the state Congress president. He has decided to send a letter in this regard to Joshi and apprise her about the incident.

“We have prepared a list of senior party members, including Usha Ratnakar Shukla,Baby Tiwari and Alok Mishra, who like Kapoor kept a distance from all party activities,” said Dixit.

According to Dixit,Kapoor did not attend the protests at Ghantaghar and Phoolbagh. He was also not seen at the Mashaal Jaloos and kept away from the protest at Shikshak Park.

“When Congress workers from different parts of the state were protesting against Joshi’s arrest,Kapoor decided to stay away from all kind of party activities,” he said.

Despite being present in the city,Dixit claimed that Kapoor did not care to attend any protest organised by the party.

“Kapoor’s behaviour is shocking as he is a senior party member and he should be leading the party,” he added.

This, however,is not the first time when the district Congress committee will lodge a complaint against Kapoor.

Soon after the Lok Sabha elections, supporters of Kapoor and Jaiswal had clashed. Though the incident was brought to the knowledge of the state Congress committee, the issue yet remains unresolved.

The Congress legislator from Seesamau,Sanjeev Dariyabadi, claimed that all party members were aware of the Jail Bharo Andolan. “We hold party meetings and discussions before any major protests and all active members are informed about any party activity through a circular,” he added.

On Kapoor’s absence,he said: “There is a possibility that he might have been busy in some important work.” Kapoor could not be contacted for any comment.
