Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday announced that rooms will be reserved for Home Guards personnel at every police station of the state.

Addressing the Foundation Day celebrations of the Uttar Pradesh Home Guards, the CM said the home guards needed rooms where they can keep their uniforms and documents. There was no specified space for the home guards attached with police stations. The CM also directed the department to submit a proposal for cashless healthcare facilities for home guards on the lines of Ayushman Bharat. Adityanath said the UP Home Guards has served as a protective shield for the state police since it was established on December 6, 1963.

Home Guards jawans have received long-overdue recognition in recent years, he claimed. In 2024, three jawans were awarded the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service, 11 for Meritorious Service, and three more in 2025, the CM said. Also, 38 commendation discs were awarded by the Government of India, he added.

“Previously, Home Guard soldiers were neglected, but today they are being honored by the President and the Home Ministry,” he said.

The Chief Minister emphasised that the Home Guards was no longer merely an auxiliary force. They now contribute significantly to law and order, traffic management, Dial 112 services, election duties, prison security, disaster control, and public building security.

Their presence is crucial at major events such as the Maha Kumbh Mela and in ensuring the successful conduct of examinations. He highlighted that over 4,000 youth have been trained as Disaster Mitras in collaboration with the Disaster Management Department, strengthening the state’s disaster response capacity.

The Chief Minister praised the Home Guards’ service during the COVID-19 pandemic. When workers and labourers from Uttar Pradesh were stranded in other states, Home Guards personnel accompanied every transport vehicle to ensure safe return, often risking their own lives.

He informed that the government had already announced a grant of Rs 5 lakh to the family of personnel who lost their life in service. To date, more than Rs 143 crore has been disbursed to the dependents of 2,871 deceased personnel.

The Chief Minister informed that the government recently announced recruitment of 45,000 Home Guards personnel and the process is already underway.

Priority will be given to appointments in home districts, enabling them to serve their communities more effectively, he said. Training in disaster management will further prepare them to act as first responders in relief efforts, the CM added.
