An engineer working with Reliance Communication Dheerendra Pratap Singh died in an attack by unknown assailants late on Saturday evening near
the Ghankarpur village in Mainpuri. His colleague,Virendra, who received a bullet in his left shoulder, was rushed to the Saifai Hospital. Doctors said his condition is stable.
Singh,a resident of Kanpur and Auraiya resident Virendra, were posted in Etawah. They were also responsible for the adjoining Mainpuri district.
On Saturday,Singh and Virendra had gone to Mainpuri on an official tour.
According to Virendra, after the work was over,we were on our way back to Etawah on a motorcycle, when four unidentified persons signalled us to stop. This occurred near Ghankarpur village, which is on the border of both districts.
Singh, however, ignored them and decided to move on. Then they opened fire from close range, and both of us fell on ground. The men vanished into thin air, added Virendra. Singh died on the spot.
The residents of Ghankarpur village informed the Karhel police. Singhs body was taken to Mainpuri for postmortem.
The relatives of Singh, however, have not ruled
out the possibility of Virendras involvement in the murder.
Singhs uncle Rajesh, who arrived in Mainpuri on Sunday, told mediapersons: If the motorcycle fell, why did the assailants spare Virendra?
The murder,he added, appeared well-planned by someone who was aware of Singhs tour to Mainpuri.
A case of under Section 302 of IPC has been registered.
Circle Officer,Karhel,Ram Lal Gautam said: It is still early to arrive at a conclusion and we are working on several aspects.
The police,he said, are waiting for Virendra to recover before recording his statement. He has given some information, but we are still to question him on several issues, he said.
A team has been constituted to trace the assailants.
