A MINOR Dalit girl, who had immolated herself after being allegedly raped by a boy and his uncle — both belonging to her community — on March 5, has succumbed to her injuries at the Lucknow Civil Hospital.
Police allegedly did not act on the complaint of the girl’s father until the death of 15-year-old last Friday.
The next day, an FIR was lodged against Sonu Raidas of Kakori area and his maternal uncle Satyanarayan — a resident of Malihabad. They were booked for rape, criminal intimidation and intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace.
Late Saturday, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rajesh Kumar Pandey suspended Kakori SHO Rampal Yadav for not registering the case on March 6. A police spokesperson said Yadav had not intimated his superiors about the “serious” incident and acted with “dereliction” in performing his duty.
The girl, a student of Class VII, was allegedly raped by Sonu and Satyanarayan on March 5 when she was alone at her house. Police said Sonu had also threatened her over phone. Following this, the girl allegedly set herself on fire. The fire was doused by neighbours and she was rushed to the hospital. Her family has claimed she had over 90 per cent burns.
Malihabad Circle Officer Javed Khan said police are looking for the accused, who are absconding. “The postmortem report is yet to arrive,” he added.
