With two more persons succumbing to injuries, the death toll in the derailment of Varanasi-Dehradun Janata Express in Rae Bareli district rose to 34 on Saturday.
Local MP and Congress president Sonia Gandhi met the injured at the KGMU Trauma centre in Lucknow during the day and urged the Railways to provide adequate assistance to the victims “at the earliest”.
“We have deep sympathies for those who have lost their relatives. I pray for the fast recovery of the injured. I expect that the Railway Ministry will provide adequate assistance to the victims at the earliest,” Sonia told reporters after meeting the victims.
The ill-fated train had on Friday derailed in Bachharwan area of Rae Bareli district. Northern Railway (NR) chief PRO Neeraj Sharma said 30 people died in Rae Bareli while four were declared dead at KGMU. He said of the 43 other injured persons, 27 are grievously hurt.
Lucknow NR Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Ashwini Srivastava said 33 of the 34 deceased passengers have been identified. “Most of those killed are from Rae Bareli and Pratapgarh districts,” he said.
The Varanasi-bound train had hit the sand hump at Bachhrawan station after the driver overshot the signal and the train failed to stop, according to Railways. Engine and two coaches had derailed and the general bogie attached just behind the engine was crushed by the coaches behind it. Maximum casualties occurred in this general bogie.
An inquiry has been ordered by Railways under Commissioner Railway Safety, Northern Circle, to ascertain the cause of the accident.
