Even as Congress president Sonia Gandhi visited her parliamentary constituency after a six-month gap,the focus on Tuesday was on her daughter,Priyanka Vadra, who attended the meeting of the district level vigilance and monitoring committee for the first time, leading to speculation of her possible entry into politics.
The district level vigilance and monitoring committee is chaired by the local MP and includes all MLAs from the district, chairman of the zilla panchayat and a representative of the state government as members.
The district magistrate is the member secretary of this committee, the purpose of which is to keep a watch on the implementation of schemes and programmes funded by the central government.
The local MP has the power to nominate a member from an NGO. Sonia has nominated Priyanka under this category as her she had been overseeing the work of Rajiv Gandhi Foundation.
She was nominated about six months back but attended the meeting for the first time today, said Amit Kumar Gupta,District Magistrate of Rae Bareli.
No specific powers have been defined for the nominated members and thus all share the same role. The purpose of the committee is to monitor the development activities and make suggestions for better implementation, he said.
The Congress does not have any MLA in Rae Bareli four MLAs are from the SP and one is an independent. Three of the MLAs attended the meeting and complained about anomalies in implementation of MGNREGS,PMGSY,and Nirmal Bharat schemes. Sources said although it was her first meeting,Priyanka gave suggestions.
It is a very significant move and has given us hope that she will soon contest from either Rae Bareli or Amethi. She has been a regular visitor for the last one-and-a-half years.
The entire Congress cadre in the constituency has been personally created by her. We hope that she will be more active in other official activites as well, said a senior party leader from the district.
At Lalganj Rail Coach factory, where Sonia Gandhi was to lay the foundation of a forged wheel factory,Priyanka accompanied her but decided not to sit on the dais.
She sat in the audience along with Sonia Gandhis representative Kishori Lal Sharma.
