THE KANPUR police, investigating the violence that took place amid protests on June 3 against controversial remarks on the Prophet by a former BJP spokesperson, on Tuesday arrested a local builder for playing a “vital role” in the incident.
The police were looking for Wasi, 67, in all three cases lodged at Beckonganj police station in Kanpur in connection with June 3 violence.
Police said that as he had remained missing, they moved a local court in Kanpur and obtained a non-bailable warrant against Wasi.
On a tip-off, the Kanpur Police arrested Wasi from near Amausi airport in Lucknow.

“Wasi is one of the main conspirators and during questioning of several accused, it came to light that he played a vital role and also funded the June 3 protest,” said Joint Commissioner, Kanpur, Anand Prakash Tiwari.
Two days ago, Wasi’s son Abdul Rehman was arrested in connection with the same case. The Kanpur Police have registered three FIRs in connection with the June 3 violence and arrested 59 persons till date.
Police identified the two other “conspirators” of violence as Mukhtar Baba and Hayat Zafar Hashmi. Mukhtar Baba runs outlets of food chain ‘Baba Biryani’ in Kanpur while Hayat Zafar is chief of a local outfit, Maulana Mohammad Ali (MMA) Jauhar Fans Association.
Recently, the state government shifted eight accused in connection with the violence, including Hayat Zafar, from Kanpur district jail to another prison.
