The Congress is all set to take on the Samajwadi Party government for the recent hike in power tariff. The party has planned four-day-long statewide agitations starting from June 8,in all the district headquarters.

The newly appointed eight zonal presidents, along with members of Parliament, members of Legislative Assembly and other party leaders, have been asked to participate in the protests at the district headquarters in their respective areas to ensure success of the agitation. Each district unit has been asked to submit a memorandum, addressed to the Governor,to their respective district magistrates demanding that the state government revert to the old tariff, calling the hike a “twin-blow” to the common people.

“The tariff hike is a torture on consumers, who are already facing problems due to long and unscheduled power cuts. The government has failed to provide proper electricity in rural and urban areas and now it has increased the electricity rates as well. It is a twin blow to the people of the state and so the party has decided to organise state-wide agitation,” said Rajesh Pati Tripathi, administrative incharge,UPCC. “We would be demanding withdrawal of the new order through which the rates have been increased,” he added.

Congress spokesperson Virendra Madan said that state president Nirmal Khatri would lead the dharna in Etah, whereas zonal presidents and co-ordinators would plan the agitations in their respective regions.
