A protest by the employees of Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) in Hazratganj area of Lucknow Tuesday turned violent, leaving nearly a dozen policemen including an Additional SP injured and about half-a-dozen vehicles ransacked or torched.
Police detained more than 150 protesters after the violence was brought under control.
A group of UPPCL’s contractual employees had organised a protest outside UPPCL headquarters demanding regularisation. “They were carrying out a march from Shakti Bhawan to Hazratganj roundabout but a few miscreants threw stones there and this led to commotion and clash,” said Lucknow Range DIG R K Chaturvedi, who reached at the spot after the violence.
Police had to resort to baton-charge to control the protesters who turned violent and ransacked about half-a-dozen motorcycles and cars parked there. The clash on the busy road also led to long traffic jam in the area.
Additional SP (East) Rajesh Kumar said ASP (Traffic) G P Chaturvedi is among 10 policemen injured in the clash. Chaturvedi suffered fracture in his hand following stone pelting by the agitators.
“Two vehicles including a police jeep were set on fire by violent protesters. Police have detained 153 protesters,” said Rajesh Kumar.
