The Ghazipur police Tuesday used force to disperse a gathering of students demanding a state university in the district since October 3. Police said more than 70 protesters were taken into preventive custody after initial cane charge. They were, later, released in the evening on personal bonds.
The protesters had begun gathering since 9.30 am after three student leaders Pankaj Upadhyay,Vikas Rai and Diwakar Sharma were taken to district hospital Monday midnight. The trio had been on an indefinite fast since October 3 at Sarju Pandey Park, located near the District Magistrates office.
We had deployed force,as we had information that the students would try to spread out and force shut-down in markets. They could have resorted to violence. Therefore,a mild cane charge was used for dispersing the gathering. No FIR has been registered against the students, said Ghazipur Superintendent of Police (City),Ram Swaroop.
The students are demanding a state university on the grounds that Ghazipur has more than 140 degree colleges. As per University Grants Commission norms, there should be a university if there are more than 50 degree colleges in one place, they said.
