The government will send water tankers to villages where drinking water is a major problem in summer.
As part of the State Water and Sanitation Mission (SWSM),the department of rural development will send the tankers to areas where the ground water level is very low and no new handpumps can be installed. The department has invited non-government organisations to deliver the tankers in the selected areas.
Executive engineer (Water and Sanitation) S Mishra said,While in urban areas, supply of water tankers for drinking water is a common practice,it is still a new scheme in rural areas. We have a list of villages where the groundwater level is really poor and no new handpumps can be installed at the moment. Hence,as a short term method,we will send tankers to meet the drinking water supply needs in these villages.
The state has a list of dark villages where the groundwater level is poor. Wells dry up completely in the summers, handpumps go dry and reboring is not a viable solution. The water tankers will be supplied in these areas as an urgent relief measure.
The department has already invited NGOs for supplying tankers in the scheme. These NGOs can either support the UP Jal Nigam, which is already doing the job of supplying water tankers,or can supply tankers themselves. We will have the scheme in place by May so that during the extreme months, there is no dearth of tankers, Mishra said.
