Principal Secretary,Energy and Industrial Development Commissioner (IDC) A K Gupta has directed constitution of an expert committee to probe the case of faulty transformer supply to UP Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) by private firms and to settle the matter within 10 days.
Gupta, while taking a review meeting of the power department, expressed dissatisfaction that no decision was taken over the fate of tainted transformer-manufacturing companies. These companies were served notices by the then CMD UP Power Corporation Limited,Avneesh Awasthi,on June 26 after a large number of transformers supplied by them broke down within a year of their installation.
CM Akhilesh Yadav,in his press conferences, also confirmed that the transformers did not contain brass wires but aluminium and were of inferior quality. The companies which have been served notices include PME Noida,RTS Jaipur,Technocrat,Accurate,PP Industries and Swaska. Besides, action was initiated against a total of 14 transformer companies.
The matter is pending for over a month. No new company has been engaged and thus there is scarcity of transformers in the state. We need extra ones during Kumbh Mela. So the expert committee has been formed which will take the final decision within 10 days, A K Gupta said.
Gupta also took stock of power over-withdrawal from Northern Grid by the state. The recent blackout on July 30 and 31 left UP in a piquant situation as it has a previous history of heavy overdrawals from the Northern Grid. Gupta instructed the officials not to indulge in overdrawal and keep it the lowest.
