Opp demands debate on BLO deaths, jobs for kin of deceased
“The time provided was less than three weeks. What was the hurry, given the expanse of the state and its population?” Congress MLA Aradhana Mishra said.
Samajwadi Party (SP) legislator Manoj Paras alleged the exercise was undertaken to delete names of voters on the basis of caste and religion and demanded Rs 1 crore compensation for the bereaved families.
Raising the issue of Booth Level Officers’ (BLO) death during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral roll, on the third day of the Assembly session on Tuesday, the Opposition sought a debate on the matter and demanded the government to provide jobs to the kin of the deceased.
“The time provided was less than three weeks. What was the hurry, given the expanse of the state and its population?” Congress MLA Aradhana Mishra said.
Alleging “undue pressure” on the BLOs who were already “burdened with their respective jobs”, Mishra claimed that the government has not even taken cognisance of the deaths and demanded jobs be provided to the kin of the deceased.
Samajwadi Party (SP) legislator Manoj Paras alleged the exercise was undertaken to delete names of voters on the basis of caste and religion and demanded Rs 1 crore compensation for the bereaved families.
Hitting back, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Khanna said the Opposition is spreading rumours and that the drive is being conducted by the EC and not the government. “Every election officer on deputation during this time period is as per the existing rules. We express our condolences for the deaths of BLOs but the exact reason is a matter of investigation,” Khanna said.
